It must be half term - Poppy and The Jezebels are gigging again. Approaching the venue through the falling fog evokes the Jack The Ripper style imagery of a London long since past. But down a back street and under the railway arches – that’s where the future lies. Like a leftover lock-up from an old Sweeney episode the interior here could be dismantled in seconds. Such transient qualities are everywhere tonight. Youthfulness flutters in and offers fleeting fame to three bands.
the starry eyed singer confesses a love of all things astronomical as she introduces ‘Blue White Yellow Red’ - the colours of dwarf stars, don’t you know...
VIOLET VIOLET arrive fresh from a noodle bath photo shoot. Norfolk’s femme fatales tear through a blistering set shaking the trackside cave. The riot grrrl response to the rumbling railway growls is best heard on new single ‘Love This Band’. The triple vocal attack is a bitches brew of jagged punk attitude.
MONDAY CLUB are up next. Astrud Steehouder is blessed with the sass of Patti Smith and the free-love spirit of Grace Slick. Dressed in red, the starry-eyed singer confesses a love of all things astronomical as she introduces ‘Blue White Yellow Red’ - the colours of dwarf stars, don’t you know.
This smouldering performance is full of highs including the burning Howling Bells style ‘Girl With The Yellow Hair’ and elsewhere there are healthy nods to Sons And Daughters and The Gossip. Monday Club aren’t starstruck and should be heading for stardom soon.

The night is still young…and it’s set to get younger. Schools out and
POPPY AND THE JEZEBELS hit the stage armed with soft drinks and sober smiles. A glittery-eyed Molly is flushed by something other than her youth - “I don’t know about you but I’ve had about seven Red Bulls tonight and I’m boiling!”
The belle brummies introduce ‘Nazi Girls’ as their song about bitches. It launches the group nervously into their Slits mode – and indeed everything goes quite wobbly during ‘Lips Of Cleopatra’, but a twinkling Molly keeps everything afloat, and within seconds they’re synchronised again - no sulks, no glares and no recriminations needed. It shows a maturity and professionalism way beyond their years. Recovery complete, they perform new single ‘
UFO’ with a more confident air and exit to echoing applause. Underneath the arches they dream they’re dreams away.
