brian jonestown massacre - my bloody underground
Released: Mon, 2008/03/31 on Cargo Records
ARTROCKER RATING:
It’s tempting to perceive the Brian Jonestown Massacre as goons in light of their legendary behaviour throughout the documentary ‘Dig’ – in which they’re seen falling off stage drunk, punching each other, buggering up record contracts and failing in every conceivable way. But doubt this not, ye finger pointing masses: the BJTM also have a bloodthirsty commitment to making subversive music that’s far out and twisted on top. And Amen to that: with this record, the band’s thirteenth to date, the group are truly sticking the middle finger up to normality.
The piano led ‘We Are The Niggers Of The World’ feels like one of Beethoven’s more restrained, tragic symphonies...
Excellently, the first track on the album is called ‘Bring Me The Head Of Paul McCartney On Heather Mill’s Wooden Peg (Dropping Bombs On The White House)’. It’s a stealthy acoustic hypnotiser that feels as old and cold as the American outback. And very pretty it is too – although sadly there are no samples of squished heads on wooden pegs.
The band’s tactic of making you laugh at the title while admiring the music continues with ‘Who Fucking Pissed On My Well?’ – a more traditional BJTM number which incorporates Indian meditational vibes, and ‘Automatic Faggot For The People’, an out of focus garage rock dirge that’s defined by ghostly slow-motion screeching.
The piano led ‘We Are The Niggers Of The World’ feels like one of Beethoven’s more restrained, tragic symphonies, while ‘Golden Frost’ is a growling rock tune that recalls Iggy Pop in a hellish punk rock mood. The difference between the two tracks is symptomatic of the album as a whole: it’s wildly unpredictable, frequently confrontational, and thoroughly delicious.
