those dancing days / johnny foreigner
Sat, 2008/02/02 - Bardens Boudoir, London
ARTROCKER RATING:
Tucked away beneath the eves of a convenience store, the Boudoir is tonight hosting some of the happiest music 300 Londoners have ever had the pleasure to witness. Kickstarting your pulse with introspective guitar hooks and machine gun snares are JOHNNY FOREIGNER. Their vocal duetting adds much needed grit to the twee girl/boy pop genre, while their set revels in the kind of quick-fire youthful commentary that Los Campesinos! are teaching. A few less additives in the diet wouldn’t go amiss, but they’re charmers nonetheless.
Dismiss all you’ve ever heard about girl groups of the past...
THOSE DANCING DAYS are a band that command attention by the bucketful. The mini venue is suddenly awash with heads, packing out all the obvious cubby-holes to show appreciation to these young Swedes. They give masses of divergence to 60s inspired pop with a touch of Cyndi Lauper; and Linnea’s vocals are drool-worthy like a deadly, sultry Sugababe.
Organs whirling into full flight, ‘1000 Words’ has a melody that simmers with desirability. Their early releases are all on display, and, like debut single ‘Hitten’, they all stick out a mile for their ability to convey giddy-up joy from simple stabbing chords and cascading drumming.
Dismiss all you’ve ever heard about girl groups of the past; these new Femmes on the block are exciting and soundtracking boozers nationwide - as proof that girls can rock with the best of ‘em.
