Ungdomskulen are a math rock, but more fun. They remind me of At The Drive In, or perhaps Foals, which is a strange thing to say, as Foals are quite new and this band have been around for a while.
They’re quite loud, and they’ve got these long, six or seven minute songs that change a lot. I think they’ve very clever, because they’re not screamy – it’s a laid back, dreamy vocal style over quite quirky and melodic math rock. That’s a very strange description, but they’re an amazing live band.
They’re funny too – the front man is very quick witted and dry. And they have the spirit of a live band that you’d want to see – they look like they’re enjoying themselves on stage. We’ve seen them play some duffers because they’re jet-lagged, but even their duffers are good.
We played a little festival in Norway in a town hall to 100-250 people. We were on after them and it was embarrassing – we were wankers! Ha ha! We’d watched a load of shit Norwegian bands, then the promoter said to us “you’ve gotta watch this band!” and I thought, well – you said that about the last bands. But they were awesome.
They look very scary when you first see them on stage, and it’s quite an intense performance. It’s technically very able, although they give the impression of being laid back. But if you think about it, they’re so tight – and melodic too.
