Straight out of the blocks and MATHS CLASS inject the second night of Artrocker’s 3rd Annual Festie with a battle of snakes and ladders between guitar and bass. Their momentum is devastating, particularly during the shouty ‘Emporio Laser’ with its whirling guitar, manic vocals and pulsating bass.

Penultimate song ‘Replays of Relays’ is joyous math rock, a penetrating juggernaut of screeching while the band attempt to trip themselves up, winding ever tighter. Finally, the looping and insistent ‘Nerves’ leaves us reeling for breath.
A slightly different take on the beat is up next as GHOST FREQUENCY speed into their first gig of the year. ‘Never Before’ is a mix of electro screamo, with Doran crawling about, encouraging the first stage-jumpers of the night. Ghost Frequency surpass their rivals with a defiantly simple blend of funky electro, emo, and in places a hint of macabre. They also unveiling a forthcoming song- an affirming take on trip-hop, though still suitably rocking. Suddenly, we’re all forced to think fast as the new rebels of dance-punk take control. Sliding into a vortex of ‘woo’s and jangly reverb guitar, SO SO MODERN are like a Kiwi glitterball tonight.
Their set is an amazing display of control in simultaneous ebb and flow, constantly shifting the focus and challenging fans of symmetry with tracks such as ‘Upgrade Your Chassis’. It would be a waste to attempt to dissect their synthesised brilliance in words, but they’re something akin to LCD, Battles and Foals – rolled into one chaotic masterpiece. Modern life may be rubbish, but So So Modern certainly aren’t. If this is day two, we shall be truly spent come the weekend…
