‘Your mum would like us!’ boasts the Housewives’ MySpace page. Mine does, proving that this claim is more than unfounded hubris; it’s a surprisingly accurate statement of fact.
Since meeting in Nottingham 18 months ago, the Housewives have moved to the harsh streets of East London, cut a debut single and gigged their collective socks off. The brutal gig schedule has clearly paid off though, as the band has notched up support slots alongside the likes of Peter Hook, Bloc Party, Belle and Sebastian, Alabama 3 and the Young Knives.
They have also added a new member, Lizzy, who by the band’s own admission “lends a feminine touch sadly lacking from our formerly machismo stage show.” Now equipped with a new member, The Housewives – Lizzy, Laurie, John and brothers Nick and Chris - are shaping up to make a marigold clad assault on the music scene that’s sure to have you boogying round your living room with a Hoover.
Their unique sound stems from a slightly drunken decision to play music which draws on Indie, Latin and Drum n’ Bass influences (I know what you’re thinking – don’t think that). It’s an eclectic mix, but it works phenomenally well. If you can imagine Jeff Buckley salsa dancing at a drum n’ bass night whilst members of the Young Knives look on, you’re probably somewhere close to what the Housewives have achieved.
Rough Trade is currently stocking the band’s self-released single ‘Get Away,’ which as your attorney I advise you to go and purchase. If you want to catch the live experience you can head down to their Christmas Hootenanny at Rooz on Friday 14th December. Failing that, you lazy blighters can simply visit www.myspace.com/hellohousewives and revel in the brilliant indie-funk madness.
Go on… you know you want to.
