The Joy Formidable - Nottingham Bodega, 16th March 2010

A great set recorded on the third night of The Joy Formidable’s current jaunt around the U.K. The long awaited new album is probably going to be released in June and I for one am marking off the days on my bedpost. This set contains a couple of new songs to point us in the right direction "Popinjay" I’m sure you’ll already be familiar with sounds spectacular but of most interest to me is the final track, a new song called "Spectrum" which is quite frankly superb. The only small disappointment is that the current tour avoids York like the plague (to be fair they played Leeds which is only 20 miles down the road but I just feel like moaning).

The Fall - Berlin, 12th February 2010

set

If you, like me are getting a bit impatient waiting for the new Fall album this should take your mind off things for a while. It has to be said that this is one of the best Fall recordings I’ve ever heard and some credit must go to Hanno the taper who has done a first rate job but what a performance from the band. You can almost feel the energy seeping through you headphones (if indeed you choose to wear such things). Most of the set is made up of songs which will be on the forthcoming album, should it ever see the light of day and once again Cowboy George is simply immense. Hopefully Smith and the gang will tour again later in the year and if they can maintain this kind of form it’s gonna be the best in years!

Bootleg download: Pixies - Hollywood Palladium, 5th November 2009

Burning world has posted this bootleg recording of a recent gig by Frank Black and co.  Tracks include, well, the whole of Doolittle I guess.

The Fall - Leeds, O2 Academy, 2nd October 2009

It seems like far too long since we last engaged in some Smith worship so let’s put that to rights. I was actually supposed to be going to this gig but as luck would have it found myself in Peterborough on that day so it was impossible. That sort of thing always seems to happen when The Fall visit my neck of the woods. They played in my home town of York last year on the only day for months I wasn’t in the City. Still at least there always seems to be someone ready to record the proceedings and share with the rest of us. Credit for this one goes to Mr/Mrs Foxyducker for whom, if I had my way a knighthood would be just around the corner.

The Fall - Manchester Academy 1, 18th July 2009

I’m getting more and more excited about the new Fall album by thye day. The new songs seem to sound better with every gig. Songs like "Cowboy George, Bury & Funnel Of Love have already become live favorites and this gig gave a storming debut to "Sloppy Floor" which is simply magnificent. This will be the last Fall gig until October by which time the new album will hopefully be just about here.

On a side note does anybody have a recording of Mark E Smith’s recent Q&A session in Huddersfield. I’ve heard it was hilarious and I will perform painfull experiments with rusty razor blades until a copy is in my possession.

Half Man Half Biscuit - Glasgow Arches, 21st May 2009

Another storming set by the boys from the Wirral. I hope there will be a new album at some point this year

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart & Manhattan Love Suicides - Live In Leicester

Right then. This will probably be the last Pains Of Being Pure At Heart posting for a while. There is such a thing as overkill after all. This one is a bit special though because we also have a recording of the support band, the wonderfull Manhattan Love Suicides. These sets were recorded at Leicester, Musician on 15th May.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Williamsburg

I’m hoping to get to see The Pains myself on Tuesday but at the moment the world is conspiring against me in that respect. Still whatever happens I can always just listen to this really loud and pretend life wasn’t such a cod. This set was recorded a couple of months ago in Williamsburg which without the aid of an atlas will remain lost to me. A superb performance of many of the tracks from the bands classic debut album which I’m sure is somewhere on your i-pod as we speak. I can’t wait for some new material…
