SxSW Music Festival Latest News

I think this is my first SxSW related post since I booked my (bargain) flights to Austin, so there’s definitely no backing out now. Not long til I go either so these posts need to step up a gear. So below are the highlights of the I, J and K pile winging their way to Texas state in March. Let’s dig in and find some excellence shall we? Inhabitants (www.myspace.com/theinhabitants...
Gadarene (www.myspace.com/gadarenemusic) Elegant folk-strewn and fiddle led instrumentals. Gay Witch Abortion (www.myspace.com/gaywitchabortion) LISTEN JUST FOR THE NAME. Noisy two piece intent on doing lo-fi Lightning Bolt with less skillz and more controversy. Geeks (www.myspace.com/thexgeeks) Probably isn’t these guys but Korean hardcore punk is brilliant, even if it is generic....
This is a misleading title (that one up there ^) because I’m actually a beginner. I’m guiding myself so it’s of little use to youze out there. Besides you’ve all been at least twice and I’ve NEVER BEEN so stop showing off yeah?! So my idea is to try to listen to all the bands in one letter category every time I post about Sxsw. So here goes A in REAL TIME. Aa (...
As expected, SxSW decided to sprinkle their already well-populated list of artists with a few more undesirables, and therefore I’ve had to trudge all the way back to A and add my thoughts to these newcomers. *sigh* It’s gonna be a long journey. Akina Adderly & The Vintage Playboys (www.myspace.com/akinaadderlyandthevintageplayboys) When did soul and funk become processed,...
Continuing my selfish self-reference guide to finding some actually good music to watch at SxSW continues with THE BEST LETTER OF THE ALPHABET. Why is ‘B’ the best? Well coz it’s curvy, has the best sound (BUH! for B!) and my initials consist of two of the fuckers. So, it’s with some excitement that I delve into SxSW’s current list of B’s who have been pretty...

As it happens, we haven’t written about electro outfit CHEW LiPS since last summer, but it seems fitting that on this first sleep-deprived weekday of Daylight Savings, we’re shaking ourselves awake with another menacing pop ballad from the London trio. “Seven,” is a giddy cut meant to divide the dancefloor, something moody and brooding until Tigs’ soaring voice...
Unlike most folks in Austin, windswept electro-disco duo The Golden Filter actually have legitimate reason to be hoovering Lone Stars: they just announced their debut album, Voluspa (a spa of volume, perhaps?), is coming out on June 15 in the U.S and April 26 in the UK. No word on who’s releasing it Stateside, but Brille will be handling the overseas duties. Tejas residents/visitors...
HUNGRY FOR A GREAT ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE? The Heartless Bastards (RSL Top Three American Live Bands in 2009) are well on their way to becoming many people’s pick as artist of the year at this point. The band released the absolutely must-have album, The Mountain , (review - recommended!) back at the beginning of the month. The Bastards are about to embark on the second leg of their...
Toronto partystarter Diamond Rings has been inspiring us both to dance and to hit Sephora for the better part of a year now, all because of one song and one make-up-spattered press pic. “All Yr Songs” is a slept-on favorite, hitting an easygoing stride from the first strum, even as John O.’s gravely vocals ring out like last call at your most beloved haunt. Yes, you’...
Kurt Vile’s upcoming God Is Saying This To You 12" (out later this month on Mexican Summer) has been my default late-night jam lately, all hazy, earnest psych-folk that feels intensely lonely and intimate, at times eliciting a stinging nostalgia for an era that I didn’t actually experience. The guy is getting a lot of much-deserved love lately from some good people, and...
