SONIC YOUTH Latest News

Barcelona is so lovely and the line up for Primavera Sound looked pretty amazing so I thought I’d go along and miss quite a lot of it, due to having free beer on tap all weekend thanks to my friend sorting me out with a magic ticket. Here’s some stuff I remember. The first thing I saw was Lightning Bolt, which was surprising because usually most people can’t actually see them...
Avant-rock deconstructivists and dreamscapers Sonic Youth will release their new album The Eternalon 9 June. Their sixteenth LP in almost three decades of existence sees the band notch up another official member; former Pavement/Dustdevils bassist Mark Ibold finally makes his studio debut after having toured with the group for the past few years. The band have also promised a number of...
Nisennenmondai and I are in a Turkish restaurant in London, and we are trying to speak to each other in English. Katoman, their tour manager, translates some questions into Japanese, answers others on the band’s behalf. Sayaka Himeno (drums, driving force) concentrates on my words as if lipreading. Masako Takada (motorik riffs; quartzy loops) and Yuri Zaikawa (one-note bass thwacks) smile...
Who: Sonic Youth Title: The Eternal Release Date: June 9th Label: Matador Records Thoughts: I don’t think too many people were surprised when Sonic Youth decided not to re-up with Geffen Records after Rather Ripped. The band had done four records for the label, and it seemed like they felt they had to keep putting out similar records. It was a shame, but some of them managed to be at the...
This song, pulled from the premonitory ‘86 LP Evol, sees the band drifting toward the regions the best Sonic Youth songs inhabit, an atmosphere somewhere between wide awake and deep dream, guitars flinching sore for a while before rising in a sudden summit of noise. Still thriving in that space over two decades later, the New York troupe just announced that 16th studio album The Eternal...

SONIC YOUTH MP3s

As you may have noticed, along with the lack of posts going on around here, the Graboid has seemingly disappeared as well the past couple of weeks. To catch everyone back up to speed, I’ve decided to post the album releases from the past few weeks that we’ve missed along with everything from this week. I’m sure I may have missed some releases, but I think I’ve covered...
Golden Bloom Indie / Rock / Pop From: Between The Lines, United States Shawn Fogel’s Golden Bloom, named one of “8 Undiscovered bands worth a listen” by SPIN Magazine, is currently in the studio with producer/engineer Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Mates of State) and Dylan Magierek (Mark Kozelek). Fogel plans to release Golden Bloom’s next LP in the summer of...
Ume
Phosphorescent Exposure For fans of Sonic Youth and Batrider comes Ume (pronounced ooo-may), being touted as one of the hottest new bands on a number of popular American music blogs. The Austin, Texas trio of Lauren Larson (guitar/vocals), Eric Larson (bass) and Jeff Barrera create driving psychedelic pop music drawing heavily on spaced out guitars and catchy but simple drum and bass rhythms....
Sonic Youth’s 16th studio album, The Eternal, hit my mailbox this weekend, so I tore it open and popped it in. Sacred Trickster, the first free download, kicks it off right…two minutes of Kim Gordon over furious crunch and fuzz. The Eternal will be released June 9th through Matador Records. Lots of Buy Early, Get Now goodies for this album, so check that out. Sonic Youth -...
A three-piece led by founding members Ken Ramos (vocals/guitar) and Melissa Pleckham (bass), Shiloe combine the driving force of Sleater-Kinney with the atmosphere of Interpol, tied together with the roughness of Sonic Youth. With their two EPs, Shiloe have caused a stir among some of the most influential tastemakers in music, including KROQ, Indie 103.1, “Buzz Bands” in...

SONIC YOUTH Reviews

This is one heavy album. Even if the word ‘heavy’ didn’t feature heavily in many of the song titles, I’d still be drawing that conclusion. Sure, it’s the kind of indie punk rock you’d expect from a band that’s played shows with Sonic Youth and Ex Models, but it’s wrapped in a thick coating of METAL and it’s all the more chewy for it....
Venue: London ICA Teaser: Smarter, faster, harder - that’s Fuck Buttons, and Kishan Callychurn was on hand to bring us this review when they brought their digital assault to London’s ICA… Pull quote 2: Intentionally or otherwise, they’re a call to arms, a ‘fuck off’ to bland ‘oooh, please like me’ music that dares to call itself alternative…...
The Eternal is the sound of Sonic Youth changing. Shaking up their recording and rehearsing style as well as their label, their sound is revitalised and freshened up. Resulting are some strong, catchy and slightly strange songs that will stand the test of time, just like their forbearers. ‘Sacred Trickster’ is a situationist play on anti-capitalists and activists’ weird ploys...
